The do’s and don’ts of wedding lists … HEADING_TITLE

Getting engaged is a fun – and stressful – moment in one’s life.  Excitement at the thought of getting married; sometimes countered by the stress of organising such a special and memorable day.  Family and friends can be a great help… as can the businesses you choose to work with you over the coming months.  Whether considering venues, photographers, dressmakers or caterers, you should ensure that everyone knows you and particularly what you want to get out of your day.

Wedding lists can be uncomfortable for some people – the idea of people spending money on you isn’t always the easiest idea to grasp.  However, it’s traditionally part of the fun of the day – and we can only encourage you to embrace the concept; with some general advice……

·         People will buy you presents, whether you ask for them or not!  If you’re not sure of your friends’ and families’ tastes, then make sure you have a wedding list – it doesn’t have to be ‘greedy’, but it will at least guide people as to your tastes.  Most wedding list suppliers can give you cards to send out with your invitations.

·        Not everyone has the same deep pockets – it’s worth catering for all price brackets.  And make sure you re-stock your list whilst it’s open, to ensure that a particular price bracket doesn’t sell out.  It’s worth thinking about both ends of the expenditure spectrum.

·        People tend to prefer buying tangible presents; something for longevity.  Don’t have too many ‘contributions to….’.

·        To keep interest, make sure you have plenty of variety – if all you have are towels and glasses available, for example, you might find people going ‘off list’.

·        Think about any sensitive items: some people don’t like buying knives, booze, ashtrays…..

·        Do you want something less traditional?  Can you make donations to charity via your list?  Not all suppliers support this.

·        It’s hugely useful if your wedding list provider will allow you to swap items once your list has closed – that way you can get whole sets of plates or glasses.  Also, a real bonus is where you can purchase outstanding items to complete sets.

·        The administrative aspect is something you should consider: can you choose when you receive your presents?  Are they sent ‘drip feed’, or do they come all together?  Do you have to pay for delivery; or wrapping?
